You’ve all been to La Bellezza by now and no doubt posted its spectacular interiors on Instagram. They’ve a new lunch menu which we didn’t need asking twice to sample.
The menu is compact, the idea being you can be in and out in 60 minutes having had a marvellous meal. The limited menu might not hit the spot for some people but there’s always a la carte which is brimming with choice.
Aperitivo was our starting point and there were four to choose from. We slurped a passion fruit virgin mojito and a bellini. From the three antipasti dishes, we opted for the prosciutto de parma and the burrata. The third option was a Greek salad which felt a bit off brand.
The plate of prosciutto was enormous but was also absolutely from the top drawer. It tasted like it had just been sliced from a leg rather than stored somewhere and the flavour was incredible. A ball of creamy burrata with a punchy pesto and sun-dried tomatoes was great. Focaccia, as always was perfect – crunchy and salty on the outside and pillowy inside, it mopped up the pesto beautifully.
Service felt a bit more hurried than normal and the main courses arrived the minute we put our forks down which might be due to the 60-minute claim. We’d rather go slow but accept other people might want to be speedy. The Mammargarita di buffalo – margarita pizza to you and me – arrived looking mighty fine. The crust was puffy and blistered, just the way we like it, the tomato sauce was tangy and the mozzarella and parmesan made for a heady combo, the salty parmesan lifting it beyond ordinary. Pasta alla Norma was the star of the show. A seriously flavour-packed tomato sauce elevated by chunks of fried aubergine and zingy lemon ricotta di bufala was dreamy.
At this point we’d have happily stopped eating and if we hadn’t been sampling the menu we’d have enjoyed an espresso and gone on our merry way, but you know, when in Rome. We shared a very nice tiramisu and a decadent chocolate mousse. Personally, we’d rather not eat three courses at lunch and obviously the restaurant isn’t forcing you to. One main is £16, one antipasti plus a main £19 and three courses, £23. If we were in a hurry we’d pop in for a bowl of pasta or a delicious-looking Caesar salad and a glass of something cold which would make for an ideal and reasonably priced lunch.
