Open evening for home schooled students
Home-schooled students are being invited to Bournville College to find out how they can fulfil their potential within an academic environment.
The Longbridge town centre-based college, which is part of South & City College Birmingham, is holding this special information evening for home-educated 14 and 15 year olds and their parents and carers.
Aimed at youngsters starting year 10 and year 11 in September, the session will give learners the opportunity to speak to staff and get advice on how they can progress their education within the college, be it through taking the core GCSEs of English, maths and science or through a vocational qualification.
Anna-Marie Wood, Head of Faculty for Higher Education and Academic Studies at South and City College, says “We have successfully re-integrated home-educated 14 and 15 year olds for a number of years and due to the high demand across the region we have taken the step to open up two GCSE groups, one for year 10 and one for year 11 which are specifically designed to help students gain the key qualifications in English, maths and science.
“In addition to the core GCSE courses, we are able to offer a fantastic variety of vocational qualifications in areas such as hairdressing, hospitality, childcare, mechanics and engineering.”

The Big Walk followed by The Big Lunch
Birmingham Botanical Gardens is offering free entry to anyone who joins The Big Walk on 26 May.
An idea from the Eden Project made possible by the National Lottery, The Big Walk is designed to celebrate the people at the heart of the UK’s communities, who work together to make a positive difference locally.
Four teams of walkers set off from Morecambe – the geographical centre of the UK – live on the BBC One Show on Wednesday 16 May. They are travelling hundred of miles, to their respective homes in Northern Ireland, Wales, Scotland and England and shining a light on the work done by extraordinary people.
Team England will be at the Botanical Gardens on Sunday and have invited local people and community organisations to walk with them through rainforests, deserts and around the stunning gardens before sitting down to a Big Lunch on the main lawn, by bringing along a picnic.
The fun starts at 11am at the Bandstand on the main lawn. The walkers will arrive at 1130am and the Big Community Walk will begin, working up an appetite for The Big Lunch at 1pm. Across the 15 acres, anyone taking part is invited to meet local groups and projects, discover ideas to improve your community, and share what you love about where you live.
