Ground breaking funding project for Vanley Burke from Ikon
Vanley Burke, the ‘Grandfather of Black British Photography’ is planning an intriguing exhibition this summer titled “At Home with Vanley Burke” made possible through a ground breaking crowd funding project devised by the Art Fund: Art Happens.
As part of the project, the IKON gallery is encouraging donations from the public to the tune of £17,000 to transport the entire contents of the photographer’s flat to the main exhibition space at the Oozells Square gallery. As well as being a proud brummie and acclaimed photographer, Vanley is an avid collector with a vast archive that provides an unrivalled insight into Birmingham’s African Caribbean communities.
Of the ambitious and revealing project Vanley says, “This flat is many things; it’s an archive, a gallery and it’s my home, it’s where I collect part of our history. History is part of a lived experience…it’s those objects that might look so insignificant, so kitsch, but to a lot of people it contains so much information about how their parents lived.” Donors to the IKON’s Art Happens project will receive exclusive rewards designed by Vanley along with VIP tickets to a summer party. 100% of donations will go to the IKON’s project.
