The perfect en suite

Creating your own bedroom bathroom is a fantastic luxury that is easier and cheaper than you might think, writes Lisa Melvin. Here she gives her top ten tips for en suite success

It’s perfectly possible to pop an en suite into a corner of a well proportioned bedroom – typically a small space with big potential. Attention to detail is the key to achieving a functional, relaxing space, regardless of space and budget. Good design maximizes space and makes your budget work hard.

Here are my top ten tips for your en suite:

  1. Think sounds – consider using an acoustic partition roll to help sound proof the walls of your en-suite. Install an ultra quiet flush cistern like Grohe’s Whisper Technology
  2. Keep it simple – use a large format porcelain tile on your floor and walls, or use mosaics to give your room some glamour
  3. Check your bathroom installer has included within their plan an appropriate, water resistant, Gypsum or Cement-based flooring, and a wall board suitable to tile on
  4. By using an epoxy grout, eradicate the build up of grime in your grout joints, or alternatively apply a grout protector before the first use of your new en suite. Try LTP floor treatment Grout Protector Spray
  5. Light up your life – Don’t neglect this crucial part of your en suite scheme. Choose LED low energy in cool white, like HIB shower lights, which are available in a number of finishes. Save energy and power usage – no more changing light bulbs
  6. Keep your toes toasty and towels dry all year round with the inclusion of an electric heated floor matt and an electric summer element for your towel rail
  7. Include an illuminated mirror to create a wow factor and give the illusion of space. Bathroom Origins Halo Mirror ticks all the boxes and even includes a demister pad to avoid a steamy reflection
  8. Accessorize – select your toilet roll holders and robe hooks in advance. They can be installed at the same time as your new en suite, rather than being an afterthought. For a touch of glamour, check out the Florida range of accessories by Bathroom Origins
  9. Include a niche within your stud walls, or an under basin unit, for all toiletries
  10. Pipe through your favourite music or radio station directly into your en suite. KB Sound has systems that integrate seamlessly into your ceiling with connectivity for your iPod or other audio device
