Party on the Southside

Southside set to usher in the Chinese Year of the Horse

Birmingham’s Southside will welcome thousands of visitors to its annual free Chinese New Year celebrations this Sunday. On-stage entertainment includes lion dances, acrobats, martial arts, singing and dancing. The festivities to mark the Year of the Horse begin at 12.30pm and conclude with a spectacular firework finale at 5.30pm. There will also be an array of traditional Chinese craft stalls on Hurst Street throughout the day. Last year’s event organised by the Birmingham Chinese Festival Committee attracted more than 19,000 visitors and helped increase footfall to local businesses by 200 per cent. This year’s celebrations are aiming to top that figure. Julia Chance, Southside BID manager, said: “Chinatown is an integral part of Southside and each year the Chinese New Year festivities continue to improve. It’s fantastic that the event helps us both celebrate an important part of this district’s culture while also providing a boost for our local businesses.”
